There are crazy extremes. It’s a city in a state of decay. But it’s also remarkable that it functions at all. Every day looks like the last day before the apocalypse. You’re surprised it doesn’t all come crashing down any moment. For the past few days I’ve been walking around an area where someone ran over a big dog. He’s still lying there. At the same time, several other people and I have agreed that there are only two cities in the world where it’s possible to live: Prague and New York. New York is an island that, despite its limitations, is absolutely enormous and isn’t stuffy. It’s actually a miracle that there’s no meltdown here at all.
